Mt. Asama — the active volcano on the border of Nagano and Gunma Prefectures — is rendered in spring 1956, the volcano's cone visible above the seasonal haze. Hiratsuka's woodblock captures the mountain's bulk with the spare authority of his mature landscape style, the spring season softening without sentimentalizing the volcanic terrain.
