A single pine tree at the Kokubunji site in Tokyo — the site of the ancient provincial temple established by Emperor Shōmu — is rendered in Hiratsuka's 1960 woodblock, ink on paper. The old pine, its trunk and spreading crown rendered with the textural directness of his knife work, stands as a living monument among the temple site's more fragmentary remains.
