Roof Tile

An early experiment in rubbing technique, this work captures the tactile surface of an architectural roof tile — an enduring fascination for Hiratsuka, who would return to tile motifs throughout his career. The rubbing process transfers the tile's embossed or incised pattern directly onto paper, making the medium itself part of the subject. It represents Hiratsuka's earliest documented engagement with Japan's ancient decorative heritage.
