Description
Yabakei Gorge in Oita Prefecture — one of Japan's most dramatic river gorge landscapes, its volcanic rock walls rising above the Yamakuni River — is rendered here in rain, the downfall softening the gorge's angular geology. Rakan-ji, the temple built into the cliff face above the gorge, is the subject's religious anchor. Hiratsuka's undated woodblock conveys the rain through vertical line, the gorge's rocky walls emerging through the falling water.
