This mezzotint pairs the Western fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty with moegi-iro, the Japanese color term for yellow-green. The sleeping figure, a subject that permits prolonged, unguarded observation of the female form, is a recurrent motif in [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga). Takahashi uses mezzotint's velvety darks and luminous highlights to render a reclining figure in repose, the moegi-iro palette softening the composition toward a dreamlike register. The contrast between the European narrative source and the Japanese color terminology encapsulates the intercultural position of postwar Japanese printmaking. The medium's tonal richness is particularly suited to rendering closed eyes, loose hair, and the relaxed disposition of sleep.
