Ryogoku — "Both Provinces" — took its name from its position at the bridge connecting Musashi and Shimosa provinces across the Sumida River. The Ryogoku Bridge area was famous for its summer fireworks, sumo wrestling tournaments, and the dense concentration of food stalls and entertainers that gathered at this central crossing point. This numbered Edo view captures one of the city's liveliest districts.
#22. Ryokoku was created by Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川広重).
#22. Ryokoku depicts sumo, rivers & lakes, and bridges.
