Hiroshige produced an estimated 8,000 designs over his 40-year career, making him one of the most prolific masters of ukiyo-e. His market has strengthened significantly in recent years, with the 2025 Sotheby's Paris record of $2.4M and growing international collector interest.
Geese descend toward their winter resting place in this surimono-format print from around 1830. The large nagaban sheet and the luxury printing technique — fine gradations, metallic pigments, embossing — mark this as a privately commissioned luxury print rather than a commercial landscape. Hiroshige's use of the surimono format allowed him to explore subjects and compositions unavailable in his popular series work.
Descending Geese was created by Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川広重) in c. 1830.
Descending Geese depicts birds & flowers and winter.
