Description
Kanda Myojin was one of Edo's great civic shrines, associated with the city's founding legend and the protector deity of the downtown merchant districts. Hiroshige's view of this well-known landmark likely captures the monumental torii gate and the honden beyond, framed by mature cryptomeria or ginkgo trees that marked the approach. Festival processions originating from Kanda Myojin were among the largest in the city's ceremonial calendar, and the shrine's prominence in the urban landscape made it a natural subject for [meisho-e](/glossary/meisho-e) series. Hiroshige may emphasize the dramatic topography of the site, which sits on elevated ground above the low city, using the distant rooflines of Edo as a counterpoint to the ritual architecture. The treatment of the surrounding greenery and the quality of light would establish the season.
