No. 58: Tarui, from the series "Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaido (Kisokaido rokujukyu tsugi no uchi)"
- Date:
- c. 1835/38
- Medium:

From Hiroshige's Hoeido Tokaido (1833–34), considered his greatest achievement and among the finest landscape print series in Japanese art. The Hoeido edition is worth many times more than Hiroshige's later Tokaido series. Early impressions show the distinctive crisp bokashi gradation that later wears away.
Tarui, station 58 on the Kisokaido, lies in the Mino plain not far from the castle town of Ogaki. This oban print from the "Sixty-nine Stations" series shows the station in its lowland setting, a stark contrast to the mountain scenery that dominates the earlier stages of the highway. Hiroshige renders the flatter terrain with the same atmospheric attention he applied to the mountain passes.
