Sawamura Tossho I portrayed Shida Hayato, a villain figure in a kabuki revenge drama, in an 1832 production that Kuniyoshi documented in this nishiki-e oban. The actor's fierce mie pose — the held, exaggerated expression freezing a moment of peak emotion — is translated into print with the bold outlining and compressed energy characteristic of Kuniyoshi's yakusha-e work of this period. Costume detail, from the mon (crest) on the kimono to the sword fittings, is rendered with the care of a craftsman steeped in warrior-print conventions.
