Description
A seasonal subject with minimal narrative — simply "Autumn" — suggests either a standalone image of autumnal scenery or a panel from a four-seasons set. Kuniyoshi's autumn imagery typically employs warm russet and amber tones in the foliage, often with figures in seasonal dress suggested against landscape. The autumn theme in Japanese aesthetics carries associations with transience, melancholy beauty, and the waning of the year, and Kuniyoshi brings to it the same atmospheric sensitivity he applies to his snow and moonlit compositions.
