Chen Da (Japanese: Chokanko Chintatsu), the "Gorge-leaping Tiger," was a ferocious Water Margin hero known for ambush tactics in mountain passes. This left sheet of an oban triptych (c. 1827-30) positions Chen Da within a larger compositional grouping of heroes from the novel, each rendered with identifying attributes. The triptych format allowed Kuniyoshi to place multiple Suikoden heroes in spatial relationship, their individual portraits combining into a unified scene of heroic assembly.
