Description
This oban brings together five Tokaido stations from the final approach to Kyoto — Minakuchi, Ishibe, Kusatsu, Otsu, and Kyoto itself. Otsu, on the southern shore of Lake Biwa, and the final entry into the ancient capital were among the most emotionally charged moments of the entire journey for travelers from Edo. Kuniyoshi's multi-station sheet from c. 1830-35 would have emphasized the lake's presence and the first sight of Kyoto's surrounding mountains, experiences travelers anticipated throughout the entire Tokaido road.
