Description

Ruan Xiao Er (Japanese: Ritchitaisai Genshoji), the "Standing Tiger," was the eldest of the three Ruan brothers in the Water Margin — a group of outlaw fishermen whose mastery of water combat made them indispensable to Liangshan's forces. This oban from the Suikoden series (c. 1827-30) depicts him in the powerful bearing appropriate to the eldest and most formidable of the three brothers, his identifying attributes as a fighter from the lakes and rivers embedded in the composition.
