Description
Shinagawa, the first post-town south of Edo on the Tokaido road, was a bustling coastal district with tea houses, inns, and the broad beach where travelers caught their last or first view of Edo Bay. Kuniyoshi's depiction of Shinagawa captures the town's character as a threshold space — neither fully city nor yet road — with the bay's expanse and the distant mountains of the Izu Peninsula providing landscape backdrop. The district's proximity to Edo made it a familiar leisure destination as well as a travel gateway.
