Zhang Qing (Japanese: Botu'usen Chosei), the "Featherless Arrow," was a Water Margin hero famed for throwing stones with such force and precision that they served as effective missiles in combat. This oban from the Suikoden series (c. 1827-30) depicts him in a throwing pose that conveys both the physical tension of the hurled stone and the deadly accuracy for which he was celebrated. The unusual weapon — raw physical force applied through ordinary objects — gave Kuniyoshi a different compositional challenge from the conventional sword-and-spear heroes.
