Actor Sawamura Gennosuke Riding on Ox as Sugawara no Michizane

This 1800 woodblock print by Utagawa Toyokuni shows the kabuki actor Sawamura Gennosuke in the role of Sugawara no Michizane, the ninth-century scholar-statesman whose posthumous deification as the deity Tenjin made him one of the most enduring subjects of Japanese theater and visual culture. The actor is depicted riding an ox, a familiar attribute of Michizane drawn from the legends surrounding his exile from the imperial court to Dazaifu in Kyushu. Toyokuni, the leading designer of yakusha-e (actor prints) in his generation, gives Gennosuke a contemplative bearing appropriate to a literary courtier rather than a warrior, balancing the dignity of the historical figure against the recognizable likeness of the contemporary performer.

Produced at the height of Edo ukiyo-e's commercial fashion for actor portraiture, the print belongs to a substantial body of work in which Toyokuni recorded specific roles performed in Edo's licensed theaters. His training in the Utagawa school under Toyoharu, combined with his close study of Sharaku and Shunsho, allowed him to fuse a strong sense of individual physiognomy with the stylized poses and rich color palette that audiences expected from yakusha-e. The composition uses the figure of the ox to anchor the lower portion of the sheet while the actor's robes and head fill the upper register, a vertical layout well suited to the role's iconic associations.

The Art Institute of Chicago preserves the sheet as part of its broad holdings of Edo-period prints, providing a documentary record of Edo's vibrant kabuki culture around 1800. Beyond its theatrical reference, the image also functions as a devotional echo, since prints of Michizane circulated widely among literate Edo townspeople who associated him with scholarship and the protection of letters.
