Description
From the series "Image of Actors on Stage," this Metropolitan Museum of Art print by Utagawa Toyokuni depicts the actor Otani Tomoemon in the role of Ono Sadakuro, one of the great villain roles of the kabuki repertoire and a fixture of "Kanadehon Chushingura," the most celebrated revenge play in the Edo canon. Sadakuro is the unscrupulous masterless samurai whose murder of an innocent traveler sets off a chain of consequences in the broader Chushingura narrative; the role demanded a particularly menacing physical presence and became a showcase for actors specializing in tachiyaku villain types. Toyokuni's design belongs firmly to the yakusha-e tradition that defined Edo ukiyo-e production and that the Utagawa school dominated for over a half-century. The series title declares the workshop's intention to inventory contemporary stage stars in their signature roles, anchoring the print to a specific theatrical event while supporting a serial collecting practice. Toyokuni renders Otani Tomoemon's face with the individualized features that yakusha-e collectors expected and surrounds him with the costume codes and stage props that identified Sadakuro at sight: a deep-blue robe, a worn straw rain hat, often a sword held in a particular threatening grip. The composition's controlled tension between exterior elegance and interior menace is exactly the kind of duality the Utagawa workshop excelled at staging. For students of Utagawa Toyokuni and of Chushingura imagery within Edo ukiyo-e, the print is a particularly clear example of villain portraiture.
