Description
Yakusha-e portrait of Onoe Kikugoro VI (1885–1949), an actor active on the Tokyo kabuki stage during the Taishō and early Shōwa periods. The specific role is unidentified, but Yamamura's actor prints commonly employ the okubi-e (large-head) format inherited from Tōshūsai Sharaku, isolating the figure against a flat washi ground and concentrating attention on the structure of stage makeup, the angle of the gaze, and the set of the mouth at a moment of theatrical pause. As shin-hanga, the sheet was produced through the publisher–artist–carver–printer collaboration, with Yamamura's nihonga drawing cut into multiple cherrywood blocks and pulled in nishiki-e polychrome registration on hōsho washi by the surishi using the baren. The print belongs to Yamamura's central project of yakusha-e, a body of work that runs parallel to Natori Shunsen's portraits of the same generation of kabuki actors.
