Description
A wooden hoist with hanging chains and a tall ladder rise from a cluttered barge in the foreground, its deck piled with baskets, boxes, and a heaped tarpaulin rendered in dark, heavy outlines. Beyond the water, a row of stepped and gabled Flemish townhouses recedes in pale grey-blue and cream tones, their forms softened and doubled by reflection in the canal. The high-contrast palette—muted, near-monochrome blues and greys against black linework—gives the harbor scene a quiet, hazy stillness. (Yoshijiro Urushibara, "Bruges at Dawn," 1919, color woodcut.)
