The Place Van Eyck in Bruges, named for the Flemish master who lived nearby, is a quiet square on the banks of a canal close to the city's eastern gate. During the 1919 Bruges series, Urushibara depicted several of the city's urban spaces, and this square — with its statue of Jan van Eyck and its characteristic Flemish brick gables — would have offered the kind of architectural subject he handled with particular skill. The juxtaposition of a Japanese printmaker depicting a square named for a European painting pioneer adds an additional layer of cultural resonance.
