Venice, rendered in Urushibara's woodblock style, joins a long tradition of Japanese artists who found in the city of canals an irresistible analogy to the waterway-laced cities of their homeland. The Grand Canal, its palazzo facades reflected in the water, gondolas moving through the shimmering light — these subjects translate naturally into the woodblock medium's strength for flat color planes and atmospheric water reflection. Urushibara's Venetian prints represent some of his most independent work, away from the Brangwyn collaboration.
