Three People Named Kichiza (Sannin Kichiza), Showa period, dated 1974, presents the three protagonists of Kawatake Mokuami's celebrated kabuki play — three rogues who share the name Kichiza and are brought together by fate, crime, and an old love letter. The play, one of the most frequently performed in the sewamono (domestic drama) repertoire, was notable for its sharply observed characters and the moral ambiguity with which it treated its outlaw heroes. Mori's rendering would have captured the three distinct personalities — the tough-minded Oboshi Kichiza, the younger Ojisho Kichiza, and the feminine Otsume Kichiza — in their characteristic poses and costumes.
