Description
Rankyo (嵐峡) refers to the Ōi River gorge near Arashiyama in Kyoto, where steep wooded hillsides descend to the river below. The gorge is known for seasonal foliage—cherry blossoms in spring, maple in autumn—and for the traditional pleasure boats that navigate its currents. Katsuda's silkscreen likely renders the gorge in one of these peak seasonal moments, using layered color screens to build the density of hillside vegetation and the flat surface of the river below. The serigraph medium is well suited to the vertical compression of gorge landscapes, where flat planes of color can suggest recession through tonal shift rather than perspectival drawing.
