Yuki Nishimoto

Yuki Nishimoto (西元祐貴, born 1988) is a Japanese sumi-e ink painter known for dynamic, large-scale works created in intense bursts of concentrated energy. Born in Kagoshima Prefecture on the southern island of Kyushu, Nishimoto taught himself the fundamentals of ink painting before breaking away from the constraints of traditional sumi-e technique to develop a highly expressive, performance-oriented approach.

Nishimoto's artistic process centers on live painting—creating works before audiences in sessions of explosive speed and physical movement, with the final composition emerging unpredictably as ink meets paper. His motifs span classical Japanese subjects such as dragons, samurai, and mythological creatures alongside contemporary figures including athletes and musicians, all rendered with a gestural boldness that bridges calligraphy, action painting, and traditional East Asian ink wash.

His career has been marked by high-profile commissions and recognition. In 2012, he won the World Best Work Award at the Embracing Our Differences exhibition in Florida. He has created a mural for the domestic terminal of Fukuoka Airport, provided the ink-painting background for a performance at the NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen (Japan's premier New Year's Eve music broadcast), illustrated the cover of Japan's Defense White Paper, and won multiple awards at the 2019 Clio Entertainment advertising awards. His live-painting performances have also taken him overseas, including an appearance at Art Basel Hong Kong in 2023.

In 2015, Nishimoto expanded his practice with tobokuga, a technique in which he paints with glaze on clay plates that are then fired at high temperatures, fusing ink painting with ceramics. In 2016, Japan's first Yuki Nishimoto Tobokuga Gallery opened in Fukui Prefecture. His work is represented by Yugen Gallery.
