Mask — men or kamen — engages one of the most ancient subjects in Japanese visual culture. Masks in the Japanese tradition range from the sublime Noh masks through the frightening visages of festival demon masks to the grotesque commedia-like forms of Kyogen. Amano's geometric abstract treatment of the mask would reduce its dramatic facial features to their structural essentials: the oval form, the eye openings as geometric voids, the characteristic expressions rendered as compositional rather than psychological elements.
