Description
Winter (Fuyu), a color woodblock from 1957 — among Amano's earliest documented works — captures the cold season in his developing geometric style. This is one of his debut-period prints, produced two years after his first Tokyo exhibition, and shows him working through the visual language he would refine over the following decades. Winter as abstract subject in Amano's early work likely draws on the severe contrasts of the season: the white of snow, the dark of bare branches, the compressed palette of the natural world under ice.
