A corner house in Fukuoka — Japan's port city on the southern island of Kyushu — is Karhu's subject in this early 1963 print, one of his first architectural studies, made while he was still developing the visual vocabulary that would define his mature work. The Fukuoka townscape differs from Kyoto in its bolder, more commercially assertive character, and Karhu responds to it with a slightly harder compositional structure than he would bring to his later, more intimate Kyoto subjects. The print is an early chapter in a lifelong conversation between an American eye and a Japanese urban environment.
