Description
The Takasegawa canal in summer is Karhu's subject in this 1990 print — the second in his seasonal triptych of the same waterway — the cherry trees now in full leaf, their dense canopy casting deep shade over the water below. Summer transforms the canal from the pink-and-white spectacle of cherry blossom season into a green tunnel of dense foliage, and Karhu finds in this quieter, more self-contained summer scene the same structural interest he identified in the spring blossoms. The canal's water is darker and cooler under the leaf canopy.
