Description
Kamishichiken — Kyoto's oldest geisha district, predating even Gion in its history — is Karhu's subject in this 1976 print, its traditional machiya townhouses and stone-paved streets rendered in the warm, specific tones that distinguish his Kyoto streetscape work. Karhu returned to Kamishichiken frequently, drawn to its quieter, less touristed character compared to Gion and to the particular quality of its evening light on old wood and stone. The print captures the district's atmosphere of restrained elegance.
