Near Chion-in — the great Jodo-shu temple complex at the foot of Kyoto's Higashiyama hills — the streets retain an old-city character that Karhu captured in this 1985 print: narrow lanes, aged plaster walls, heavy tile rooflines, and the occasional view across the city that the hilly terrain provides. The area around Chion-in, with its mix of temple precincts, traditional residences, and small shops, gave Karhu the layered urban texture that he found most rewarding as a printmaking subject. The proximity of sacred and domestic is characteristic of old Kyoto.
