Description
Onomichi — the hillside port city on the Seto Inland Sea, celebrated for its sloping alleys, ancient temples, and views across the water — is Karhu's subject in this 1971 print. The city's vertical topography, with houses stacked up steep hillsides in a way that creates dramatic roofscape views, made it a natural fit for Karhu's aerial perspective and his eye for the patterns created by dense traditional architecture. Onomichi was a subject for several major Japanese printmakers, and Karhu's version brings his particular warmth and directness to the celebrated hillside town.
