Rain falls on Kyoto rooftops in this 1977 print by Karhu, the familiar geometry of tile and timber now wet and reflective, the sky heavy and grey in a way that fundamentally alters the color and mood of a scene he knew in all weathers. "Rain and Roofs" represents Karhu at his most atmospheric — a printmaker who understood that the same streets and rooftops looked different on every kind of day, and that the most revealing light was not always the most flattering. The wet tiles catch light in ways that dry ones do not, and Karhu was alert to this.
