Description
Takayama — the beautifully preserved old town in the mountains of Gifu Prefecture, its sake breweries and merchant houses maintaining the Edo-period fabric better than almost any other Japanese city — is Karhu's subject in this 1964 print, early in his Japanese career. Takayama's architecture, with its dark-timbered facades and deep-eaved rooflines, provided Karhu with a version of the traditional urban fabric he was developing his eye for, richer in surface texture and more immediately legible as historical than the already-modernizing streets of the major cities.
