Description

This oban woodblock print depicts the scene outside Chang Man Gate (Changmen), one of the historic gateways to the walled city of Soochow (Suzhou) in Jiangsu Province. The area outside city gates in Chinese towns was typically a zone of commercial activity, where markets, inns, and transport services clustered to serve travelers arriving and departing. Keith captures this liminal space between city and countryside, where the massive gate structure anchors a composition populated by figures going about their daily business. The ancient walls and gate of Suzhou, dating back to the Spring and Autumn period, gave Keith monumental architectural forms to work with. The print records a scene from a pre-revolutionary China where city walls still defined urban boundaries and gates still regulated movement.
