Classified as both summer and abstract, Summer Day allows Fukita to interpret seasonal heat and light through pure color and form rather than descriptive imagery. High-key yellows and oranges, or alternatively the bleached-out contrast of strong midday light, may structure the composition. Fukita's layered printing technique creates color depths that read as heat or luminosity depending on placement and adjacency. The abstraction of summer as a quality of light rather than a scene of activity is consistent with his broader practice, which treats nature as a perceptual and emotional experience rather than a subject for documentation. Surface texture from the carved woodblock contributes to the tactile warmth of the image.
