Tree engages one of the most structurally productive subjects in woodblock printmaking: a form that echoes the medium's own material. The branching architecture of a tree — vertical trunk, bifurcating limbs, dispersed canopy — translates naturally into carved line and relief texture. Fukita's abstract approach likely reduces the tree to its essential gesture: a strong vertical interrupted by lateral movement, possibly rendered as dark line against chromatic ground or as color-field silhouette. The grain of the woodblock itself may reinforce the organic quality of the tree's form, integrating medium and subject. Classification as both Trees and Abstract indicates that the print balances recognizable reference against formal invention characteristic of his mature practice.
