Description
Autumn Leaves — koyo — is one of the most beloved subjects in Japanese art, and Fujita approaches it through his abstract woodblock language rather than the descriptive naturalism of traditional kacho-e. The fallen or falling maple and ginkgo leaves become shapes, colors, compositional events — their transformation from green to gold to crimson is for Fujita a color study as much as a seasonal document. The woodblock medium, with its capacity for saturated pigments and layered printing, is especially suited to the rich chromatics of koyo.
