Description
Cataloged without a descriptive title, this sosaku-hanga woodblock print represents Fujita's signature reduction of observed nature to its underlying geometric order. The print likely belongs to his forest series, in which repeated vertical forms — trunks, shadows, light columns — establish a rhythm across the washi surface analogous to musical meter. Fujita's training in oil painting before his conversion to printmaking is evident in his sophisticated handling of tonal relationships; pigment layers are built up gradually across multiple block impressions, producing colors with an optical depth not achievable in a single pass.
