Description
Among the group of generically cataloged works by Fujita, this woodblock print demonstrates the formal discipline that defines his contribution to postwar sosaku-hanga. His compositions avoid anecdote and narrative, instead treating the forest as a structural problem: how to render depth, light, and organic irregularity through the flat, additive logic of woodblock printing. Multiple carved blocks — likely including a key block for contour and several color blocks — are printed in careful sequence on dampened washi, with each layer modifying or enriching the last. The palette typical of his forest works draws on the cool neutrals of bark and shadow punctuated by warmer passages suggesting sunlight or seasonal foliage. The result is contemplative rather than descriptive.
