Description
A mountain path — one of the most ancient subjects in East Asian landscape art — is given the modernist treatment in this composition designated "C" within a series. The path winds upward through compressed, angular terrain, Kitaoka distilling the experience of hiking through mountain country into a sequence of bold planes and sharp tonal contrasts. The path itself functions as a compositional device, leading the eye through the print while suggesting the physical and perhaps spiritual experience of ascent.
