A mountain path — one of the most ancient subjects in East Asian landscape art — is given the modernist treatment in this composition designated "C" within a series. The path winds upward through compressed, angular terrain, Kitaoka distilling the experience of hiking through mountain country into a sequence of bold planes and sharp tonal contrasts.
