Description
Beech (buna) forests cover the mountainous interior of northern Japan with a particular beauty: in autumn, the smooth-barked trees turn from deep summer green through yellow to a coppery gold before dropping their leaves. Kitaoka captures this autumnal transformation in this composition designated "AKI" (autumn), the forest floor and canopy both saturated with seasonal color. The smooth-barked trunks rise through layers of warm foliage, their pale gray providing a cool counterpoint to the surrounding fire.
