Description
"Path to the forest B" is the second variant in a series of compositions organized around this simple, resonant motif: the path that leads from open ground into the enclosed world of trees. The path as compositional device creates depth and direction, drawing the eye into and through the picture plane. The forest at the path's end offers the contrast between open and enclosed space that Kitaoka returns to throughout his landscape work — the threshold experience of entering the woods captured in the woodblock's sharp tonal contrasts.
