Description
This second Japanese Seashore print — distinguished from the first by its catalog number — represents either a different coastal site or an alternative compositional approach to similar subject matter. Kitaoka may have varied the vantage point, time of year, or tonal emphasis between the two versions. Where the first may present a panoramic view, this variant might focus more tightly on a specific rock formation or wave pattern. The existence of two works with the same title is consistent with Kitaoka's practice of developing series and variants, as seen in his Constellation and other titled groups. Both prints demonstrate his interest in the specific, observed qualities of the Japanese coast rather than generalized scenic beauty.
