Description
"Late Autumn," printed in 1960, captures the season at its furthest point — when the last leaves have turned and the landscape stands between autumnal color and winter's bare austerity. Kitaoka uses ink and color on paper to build a composition of rich, muted tones: the dark ochres and deep russets of late-season foliage, the cold blues of water and shadow, the whole scene registering the year's fading warmth. The medium note "ink and color on paper" suggests a more painterly approach than his purely printed works.
