Description
A mountain viewed straight-on, stripped to its essential silhouette and internal color gradations — this is Kitaoka at his most formally direct. The mountain's shape, its characteristic outline, its geological character rendered in the woodblock's clean-edged forms, without the framing devices or atmospheric mediation of traditional landscape. The simply titled "Mountain" announces its subject without elaboration, the print itself making the case that the mountain's form is sufficient subject for sustained visual attention.
