$500–$5,000. Common prints: $500–$1,500. Key value factors: Kitaoka's refined style has a modest but loyal collector base.
A Tokyo landscape — the city seen from some vantage that compresses its horizontal sprawl into a composition of rooflines, towers, and the spaces between buildings — is rendered in Kitaoka's characteristically geometric style. The city as subject posed particular challenges for a modernist committed to simplification: Tokyo's density and variety resisted the kind of reduction that worked for mountain or forest. Kitaoka's solution was to find the underlying geometric order of the urban landscape beneath its apparent chaos.
