Description
"Mountain in spring J" — the tenth variant in a series of spring mountain compositions — finds Kitaoka still exploring the formal possibilities of a subject he returned to across decades. Each lettered variant discovers something slightly different in the mountain's spring character: the particular quality of that season's light on rocky slopes, the way new growth defines the tree line, the relationship between still-snowy peaks and the warming lower slopes. By variant J, Kitaoka has moved well beyond the initial observation into a sustained formal meditation.
