"Nikke," from around 1935, likely depicts the Nikke (Nippon Keito Spinning Company) facility — one of Japan's large textile manufacturing enterprises that were central to Japan's industrial modernization and export economy in the prewar period. Industrial subjects were unusual in the landscape-focused sosaku-hanga tradition, and this early work may represent a commission or a young artist's engagement with the realities of Japan's industrial transformation. The spinning mills and their surrounding communities were a significant feature of the Japanese landscape in the 1930s.
