Description
"Unknown, Snowy Street" depicts an unspecified Japanese urban or village street under snow — the familiar features of a street transformed by the white covering into a composition of simplified forms, the buildings and road markings softened to essentials. Snowy city streets in Japanese art carried a particular quality of quiet and suspension: the noise of traffic muffled, the usual visual complexity reduced by the white covering, the human scale of the street suddenly more intimate. Okuyama's treatment of this subject reflects his equal facility with urban and rural landscape subjects.
